Thoughts for May 29, 13 Reasons Why Not

I recently mentioned the series on Netflix that is based on a book by the same name, "13 Reasons Why", that chronicles the life of a teenage girl and the events that led her to commit suicide.  I understand that this is a touchy subject and tends to bring about strong emotional responses.  I do not intend to debate the rationale of suicide or the eternal destination of those who take their own lives.  Looking at the message Jonah proclaimed to the Ninevites, there response to it, and the subsequent forgiveness of God, I am reminded of the hope of salvation.  Even as a Christian, the message of the Gospel is something I need to hear and be reminded of daily.  I may be a pastor but that doesn't exclude me from dealing with the frustrations and struggles of life.  Things such as depression, my own sinfulness, financial matters, family issues, and trying to raise Christlike children in a world that seems to be headed straight to hell are just a few of the things that creep into my mind.  The one thing we all have in common is that we all have struggles.  For this reason I offer to you a list of 13 reasons why not, based on the hope found in Scripture:

1. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world - John 16:33

2. His steadfast love endures forever! - Ps 118:1

3. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son - John 3:16

4. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with us - Hebrews 4:15

5. For He has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." - Hebrews 13:5

6. Cast all your cares on Him, because He cares fro you - 1 Peter 5:7

7. And you who were once alienated, He has reconciled by His death, to present you as holy, blameless, and above reproach - Colossians 1:21-22

8. He puts  our tears in a bottle - Psalm 56:8

9. The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. - Romans 8:26

10.  I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord - Jeremiah 29:11

11. Nothing can separate from the love of God in Christ Jesus - Romans 8:39

12. You are created in the image of God - Genesis 1:27

13. Now this is love, not that we loved Him but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins - 1 John 4:10
