Parable of the Sower

In the parable of the sower there are three main things to evaluate that may help us understand whether or not fruit will be produced.  The sower, the person spreading the seed, scattered the seed the same way as he walked along.  The seed, as Luke tells us, is the Word of God and therefore is powerful, perfect, and able to produce fruit.  The only variation is found in the soil.  Pedology is the study of soil in its natural environment and is used to determine which crops would do better in which type of soil.  Farmers and people who's lives depend on a good harvest will often have a soil study done, if possible, prior to planting a crop.  If there is to be a realistic expectation of fruit being produced and honest examination of the soil must be done.  It is the same with people.  The seed(Word of God) is powerful and effective.  As Paul tells us, faith comes by hearing and hearing through the Word.  So if the issue isn't the seed, an examination of the heart needs to take place.  If I am not producing fruit, then I should examine the soil of my heart and ask God to show me those areas where I have grown hard and calloused, those where I would rather not contend for the faith because it's too costly or too hard, and those things that have distracted and deceived me and replaced Kingdom desires in my life.   If fruit is to be produced and examination of the soil must be done.
